What size should an OG image be?
1200×630 pixels, approximately 1.91:1, is our practical starting point for a landscape share image. Export a clear JPEG or PNG, keep important details away from the edges, and aim below 1 MB when quality allows. That file-size target is a performance recommendation, not a universal platform limit.
Platforms can choose different crops, thumbnails or layouts. Check the actual image dimensions below, then confirm the card in the app where you will share it.

This reads the declared image URL and measures a fetched, decodable image. It cannot predict a platform's final crop.
Image dimensions and aspect ratios
| Dimensions | Ratio | When to use them |
|---|---|---|
| 1200×630 | About 1.91:1 | OG Fixer's general landscape starting point; verify the final crop. |
| 1200×627 | About 1.91:1 | Listed in LinkedIn's sharing-module image guidance. |
| 1200×600 | Exactly 2:1 | Use when you deliberately design a 2:1 asset. A 1200×628 image is not exactly 2:1. |
| 1200×1200 | 1:1 | A separate square composition when the intended layout calls for one. |
Aspect ratio is width divided by height. Changing the declared width and height in your HTML does not resize the file; those values should describe the actual asset.
Platform guidance and what to verify
Its website-sharing guide lists 1200×627 minimum dimensions, a 1.91:1 recommended ratio and a 5 MB maximum for the sharing module. These are link-sharing guidelines; ad formats have separate rules. Use Post Inspector to inspect your URL.
iMessage
Apple's Messages guidance recommends images at least 900 pixels wide. It also says display size varies by context and device. Check in Messages after updating the image and tags.
Facebook and X
Use the Facebook Sharing Debugger for Facebook's view of a link. For X, inspect the card in the post composer; its old Card Validator preview was removed. A local card simulation cannot establish either platform's final crop.
WhatsApp, Slack and Discord
Start with the landscape recommendation above and a public, lightweight image. Test the actual link in the intended app. We do not present a universal byte limit, exact crop or cache-expiry time for these clients.
A missing WhatsApp preview can also come from an app setting. Follow the WhatsApp troubleshooting guide before changing an otherwise working image.
Declare the image you actually uploaded
<meta property="og:image" content="https://example.com/images/share.jpg" />
<meta property="og:image:width" content="1200" />
<meta property="og:image:height" content="630" />
<meta property="og:image:type" content="image/jpeg" />
<meta property="og:image:alt" content="A description of the image" />
<meta name="twitter:card" content="summary_large_image" />
<meta name="twitter:image" content="https://example.com/images/share.jpg" />The Open Graph protocol defines the image URL and optional width, height, type and alt fields. Keep these fields beside the image they describe. If you use a separate image for X, set twitter:image to that asset.
The dimensions are right, but the preview still fails
- Check the returned file. The image URL should return a decodable image, not a login page or HTML error.
- Compare declared and measured dimensions. The checker reports dimensions only when it can fetch and decode the image.
- Inspect the live tags. Confirm the deployed page points to the intended asset, with no conflicting image declarations.
- Allow room for cropping. Move essential text or logos away from the edges and compare the destination app's result.
- Check for an old preview. Publishing a new image does not automatically replace a card already stored by another platform.
Continue with the debugger tools guide or the iMessage checklist if size is not the cause.
Check the image before replacing it
The free check reads metadata and checks the referenced image. A new image is useful when the asset needs changing; it does not fix a blocked URL or refresh an app cache.
