OG Image Aspect Ratio: Compare Crops Before You Share
A good share image keeps its subject and headline readable when the frame changes. Compare three common shapes before you publish.
Updated
What aspect ratio should an OG image use?
Start with a landscape image around 1.91:1. Our practical starting size is 1200×630 pixels. Its exact ratio is about 1.905:1; a 1200×600 image is exactly 2:1. Neither choice guarantees a particular crop in every app.
Use the inspector below to see which details disappear when the frame changes. The dimensions come from the file your browser reads. The crop frames are design simulations.

Compare your image's crops
Choose a file from your device. It stays in this browser; this tool does not upload it. The frames below are simulated crops, not previews from a social platform.
JPEG, PNG, WebP or GIF, up to 10 MB. Changing a crop here does not edit or export the original image.
Read the crop, then adjust the composition
- Find the essential content. Keep the subject, headline and identifying mark visible together. If a square crop removes the headline, create a separate square composition when you control that placement.
- Try both landscape frames. A small ratio change can still cut off text close to an edge. Moving the image within the inspector helps you see the tradeoff; it does not change the file.
- Leave flexible margins. There is no single safe rectangle that guarantees every platform's crop. Leave breathing room around essential details and check the real destination app.
- Review at a small size. Long headlines and fine print may become unreadable in a compact card even when they are inside the frame. Shorten the copy or increase the type size in your image editor.
Ratio, resolution and file size answer different questions
| Measure | What it tells you | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Aspect ratio | The image's shape: width divided by height. | 1200×600 = 2:1. |
| Pixel dimensions | How much image detail is available. | 600×300 and 1200×600 share a ratio, but not a resolution. |
| File size | How many bytes must be transferred. | Compression can reduce bytes without changing dimensions. |
The OG image size guide covers export sizes and platform guidance. JPEG or PNG is a useful starting point for a broadly shareable asset; keep it lightweight while preserving readable text.
What the platform documentation actually says
LinkedIn's website-sharing guidance recommends a 1.91:1 ratio and lists image requirements for its sharing module. Those guidelines apply to that context; they do not define every app's renderer.
Apple's Messages guidance recommends images at least 900 pixels wide and explains that preview presentation depends on context. A simulated crop cannot establish the final layout in Messages.
The Open Graph protocol lets a page declare the image URL, width, height and alternative text. Declaring different dimensions does not resize the asset. Publish values that describe the file you actually serve.
Already published the image?
A local file can look right while the live page still points to an older image. Check the page URL to inspect its declared image and any dimensions the checker can verify.
Check your OG image dimensions free
Check for missing OG tags and an image that fails to load before working through the checklist. No account or payment required.
This reads the declared image URL and measures a fetched, decodable image. It cannot predict a platform's final crop.
Finish the sharing check
- Old image still appears? Follow the source, image and platform checks.
- Image missing altogether? Use the WhatsApp or iMessage troubleshooting guide.
- Managing a whole set of pages? Check up to five public pages together.
